FGM: Female Circumcision Can Lead to Death

As Nigeria observes the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), parents and guardians are cautioned against subjecting their female children to the harmful practice, which can lead to death.

This year’s theme is “Her Voice. Her Future. Investing in Survivor-Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation,” highlighting the importance of supporting survivors and women-led organizations in the fight against FGM. Anti-FGM advocates across the country emphasized the severe consequences of FGM, including lifelong damages, low self-esteem, and even death.

Despite progress, the practice persists, with more than 200 million survivors globally and nearly 4.4 million girls at risk in 2024 alone.
