Keyamo: Airlines will pay passengers for delayed, cancelled flights from January 2024

In a significant development, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo announced on Tuesday that regulatory bodies in the aviation sector have received directives to enforce compensation for passengers facing flight delays or cancellations, effective January 2024.

Speaking before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Aviation to present his ministry’s 2024 budget, Keyamo emphasized the commitment to customer satisfaction. He pledged to publish a weekly list of airlines involved in delayed or canceled flights, specifying the duration of delays, compensatory actions taken by regulators, and the airlines’ names.

Keyamo proposed a compensation mechanism involving discounted flight tickets for affected passengers, suggesting a 50% or 40% rebate for subsequent purchases. Additionally, he underscored the importance of private partnerships and concessions as the preferred method to develop Nigerian airports, citing financial limitations as a compelling reason for collaboration with tier one investors for optimal results.
