FG Discontinues Treason Case Against Sowore

The Federal Government has announced its decision to drop the treasonable felony case against Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, as well as his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare aka Mandate.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, conveyed this intention in a document addressed to the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Abuja Division. The document, dated February 15, 2024, cited the powers conferred on the Attorney General under the Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act as the basis for the discontinuation.

This development comes after the trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, had threatened to strike out the case due to the prosecution’s inability to present clear arguments in court. Sowore, who was arrested in 2019 and has been legally represented by the law firm of Femi Falana, SAN, has expressed his intention to sue the Federal Government and the Department of State Services for the alleged assassination of his brother and the trauma caused to him and his family.

The decision to discontinue the case has been widely reported by various news sources.
