The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has expressed strong opposition to the proposed education loan scheme, stating that it will keep students in permanent debt.
After its National Executive Council meeting at the Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, ASUU highlighted the failed promises of the APC government in addressing issues that led to the nationwide strike of February–October 2022.
The union rejected the Students Loan Scheme, warning that it would starve public universities of funding and lead to perpetual indebtedness for students.
Instead of the loan scheme, ASUU suggested that grants and scholarships should be made available to students, and the Needs-Based Budgeting System should be restored to the university system for greater efficiency.
