The tragic death of Dr. Umoh Michael, a medical doctor at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has stirred controversy as conflicting reports emerge regarding the circumstances leading to his demise. Dr. Michael, who reportedly performed a 72-hour marathon surgery, passed away after collapsing at his church on September 17, 2023.
The Association of Resident Doctors at LUTH expressed their grief and raised concerns about alleged bullying by senior colleagues and inadequate accommodations. However, LUTH’s management refuted claims of the doctor’s extended shift, stating that records showed his last call was on September 14, 2023.
In a press statement, the management explained that the record from the Neurosurgery unit shows that the last time Umoh was on call was the 13th and 14th of September 2023.
