69 individuals accused of participating in a same-sex wedding ceremony in Ekpan Community, Delta State, have been granted bail.
The suspects, who were arrested on August 27, 2023, were released on bail with a sum of N500,000 and two sureties each. The sureties must reside within the Effurun jurisdiction of the Court.
The suspects are also required to sign an undertaking at the State High Court of Justice in Uvwie LGA, where they were previously arraigned. While the police prosecutor opposed the bail condition, the suspects’ lawyer argued that the alleged crime was not a capital offense.
The Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, has vowed to prosecute the suspects in accordance with Nigeria’s Anti-Gay Law, which prohibits same-sex marriage in the country. The suspects will be charged in court, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
