Nigeria has been confronted with a myriad of security challenges. The most recent
being the upsurge in banditry across the North-West part of the country. There have
been allegations that this security threat is being perpetrated by those in the affected
communities, with security agents having a hand in the debacle.
In Zamfara state, a committee was inaugurated by Governor Bello Matawalle in July
2019 to find solutions to the cases of banditry plaguing the state. The committee
revealed that it had concrete evidence that 5 Emirs, 10 soldiers, police officers, and
civil servants were all discovered to be involved in the menace.
While it is the duty of security agents to protect the lives and property of citizens, the
reverse appears to be the case as some security personnel are alleged to have their
hands smeared in banditry. The 300-page report by the committee will be useful to
not only Zamfara State alone, but other state governments and the Federal
Government in order to address the security threats in the country.
