Kano Hospital Board Sacks Three for Extortion

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has dismissed three staff members of Kabo General Hospital and suspended three others for alleged extortion. This action was approved by the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, after an unscheduled visit to the facility.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Hospitals Management Board, Samira Suleiman, the three officers of the X-ray unit were found charging patients N12,000 for X-rays, which is above the approved hospital price of N2,000. They failed to provide any evidence of payment, resulting in the hospital conducting less than 10 X-rays per week despite having two functional X-ray machines.

“The Executive Secretary of the board approved the immediate dismissal of the three officers on grounds of extortion of patients.” the statement said.

The statement also mentioned that the Executive Secretary approved the suspension of the Accountant, Auditor, and Head of the laboratory for selling free HIV test kits provided by the state government. They have been directed to report to the board headquarters for further disciplinary actions.

Dr. Nagoda noted that the Labour ward was in poor condition, lacking bed sheets, compound officers, and containing outdated equipment. He emphasized that the decision against the affected workers should serve as a deterrent to others.

“We took an oath, so we will stick to that oath and sanitise the system. Dr. Nagoda stated.

The Executive Secretary was accompanied during the visit by the DG of the Kano Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Muhammad Abbas, and the DG of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr. Usman Bashir.
