Namibian President Hage Geingob Dies, Nangolo Mbumba Sworn In as Successor

Namibia witnessed a swift transition of power as Nangolo Mbumba, the vice-president, assumed the presidency just hours after announcing the passing of his predecessor, Hage Geingob, aged 82. Geingob, a veteran of Namibia’s independence struggle, succumbed to cancer while undergoing medical treatment in Windhoek. Last month, he publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis. Following Geingob’s death, Mbumba was promptly sworn in during a ceremony at the state house.

He will hold the position until upcoming elections later this year. Reflecting on Geingob’s legacy, Mbumba praised his leadership and constitutional contributions, emphasizing a commitment to a calm and stable nation. Geingob, who became president in 2015, played pivotal roles in Namibia’s political landscape since its independence in 1990.

Global leaders, including South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, mourned his passing, highlighting his significant role in the liberation from colonialism and apartheid. Geingob’s legacy includes his resilience during exile, academic pursuits in the US and the UK, and his return to Namibia a year before its independence in 1989.
