Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, has called on the Federal Government to disclose the specifics of the alleged allocation of N30 billion to each of the 36 state governors to mitigate inflation and the high costs of food items.
He emphasized the need for the government to cease the practice of haphazardly distributing scarce and borrowed funds to address immediate problems and consumption.
Obi’s request came after Senate President Godswill Akpabio mentioned an “unconfirmed report” indicating that state governors had each received N30 billion from the federation account to alleviate the economic challenges and widespread hunger in their states.
However, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State dismissed Akpabio’s claim, stating that there was no truth to the assertion that states received an additional N30 billion each beyond their regular revenue allocations.
In a statement on his social media handle on Friday, Obi stated that the breakdown of the disbursement should be provided for the sake of transparency and good governance.
He highlighted that such transparency would allow the public, particularly the intended beneficiaries, to monitor and ensure that the funds are utilized appropriately for their benefit.
Obi appealed to state governments to ensure that these resources are genuinely and openly invested in productive ventures, aimed at alleviating the current hardships faced by citizens.
