June 12: Police surround protest venue in Lagos, fire teargas at protesters

Men of the Nigeria Police Rapid Response Squad have surrounded Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos State, the venue of the June 12 protest.

About 3 Hilux Vehicles and two armored tanks were reportedly seen at the venue of the protest as of Saturday morning.

It was gathered that operatives of the Lagos State Police Command also fired tear gas canisters at the protesters gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park.

The protesters were demanding an end to bad governance when they were tear-gassed by the security operatives.

Recall that the Lagos State Police Command had claimed it was unaware of any planned protests by any group/groups on Democracy Day.

The spokesman of the command, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the claim in a statement on Friday.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the public should disregard the call by organizers of the protest and urged people to go about their lawful businesses on Saturday.

He said; “The police and other security agencies have made necessary arrangements to maintain law and order across the state.”
