UK records over 1,500 COVID-19 deaths, highest daily toll

The United Kingdom reported a daily record of 1,564 Covid-19 casualties on Wednesday. This is the first time the death toll has passed the 1,500-mark since March last year.

The total casualty figure from COVID complications in the UK is now at 84,767.

It is reported the recent deaths occurred within 28 days after the victims tested positive for the virus.

According to the government’s coronavirus dashboard, 47,525 new COVID cases have been recorded and the country currently has a total of 3,211,576 confirmed cases and 1,406,967 recoveries.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has expressed concerns about a new variant of the virus identified in Brazil.

“We are concerned about the new Brazilian variant,” Johnson stated.

“We already have tough measures… to protect this country from new infections coming in from abroad. We are taking steps to do that in respect of the Brazilian variant.”

“There are lots of questions we still have about that variant. We don’t know, for instance, any more than we know whether the South African variant is vaccine resistant.”

Worldwide, more than 91 million coronavirus cases have been reported with more than 1.9 million deaths.
