Lagos House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa in trouble as EFCC freezes his naira and dollar bank accounts, political watchers link his ordeal to Bola Tinubu’s undeclared 2023 presidential ambition

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday ordered a temporary confiscation of three bank accounts run by Mudashiru Obasa, the Lagos House of Assembly speaker.

The three accounts, two denominated in naira while the third holds U.S. dollar deposits, were frozen based on a request of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency- the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Obasa was called in for questioning earlier on Thursday by the EFCC over allegations of financial impropriety against him. The freeze on his account came hours after he arrived at the EFCC field office in Lagos.

Obasa, from Agege, faces multiple claims of fraud to the tune of N9 billion. He has consistently denied all charges, dismissing them as the antics of his political detractors.

Some political watchers are however connecting Obasa’s current ordeal to the political games that would determine the 2023 presidential contest. The Lagos speaker is supported by APC strongman in Lagos, Bola Tinubu who will likely run for the presidential seat in 2023.

Humiliating or jailing Obasa would be a great setback for the presidential ambition of the former Lagos governor.
