EFCC Files Fresh Charges Against Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to prosecute former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele on four charges related to the approval of N684.5 million notes at a rate of N18.96 billion, according to a report by Shola Soyele.

The EFCC alleges that Emefiele disregarded the law with the intention of causing harm to the public during the implementation of the naira swap policy under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Emefiele is accused of unlawfully authorizing the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.

The former CBN governor is expected to be arraigned on these charges before Justice Maryann Anenih of the FCT High Court, Abuja on April 30, bringing the total number of charges against him to three.

Emefiele was previously arraigned on November 17, 2023, before Justice Hamza Muazu on a six-count charge of procurement fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty. He was also accused of misusing his office by approving a contract for the acquisition of 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion from 2018 to 2020.

On April 8, 2024, the EFCC also charged Emefiele and one Henry Omoile before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos for an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud. Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charge.
