AGF Urges Ex-Kogi Governor Bello to Submit to Probe

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has called on former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to submit to a probe by the EFCC over alleged corrupt practices. Fagbemi Thursday in a statement, criticized the use of immunity by the incumbent governor, Ahmed Ododo, to prevent Bello’s arrest, describing it as ‘disquieting’.

According to the AGF, the EFCC is legally authorized to invite anyone for questioning, and obstructing their efforts is not advisable. The AGF expressed concern over the actions of the incumbent governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, who allegedly attempted to prevent Bello’s arrest, stating that such actions undermine the rule of law and tarnish Nigeria’s reputation globally.

The EFCC has been persistent in its efforts to arrest Bello, who is facing allegations of money laundering to the tune of N84 billion. The case was brought before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja, who adjourned the hearing to April 23, 2024, for substituted service and possible arraignment.

Despite Bello’s absence from the court session, the EFCC remains determined to arraign him alongside three other suspects on charges related to money laundering. The EFCC’s efforts to execute a warrant of arrest against Bello faced resistance, with the current governor reportedly aiding Bello’s departure from his residence.

The AGF emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that anyone who is invited by the EFCC or any other agency should honor such an invitation instead of resorting to self-help and escapism. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Bello faces justice for the alleged offenses.
