DSS Urges Vigilance Against Improvised Explosive Devices

The Department of State Services (DSS) issued a cautionary message on Friday, advising the public to remain vigilant against potential threats, particularly Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). These homemade bombs are commonly used by bandits and terrorists to instill fear among security personnel and civilians in the North East and North West regions of Nigeria.

During the 2023 North East Security Meeting, security consultant Group Captain S.G Shehu presented data indicating that Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states experienced 376 incidents of explosive ordnance, resulting in 151 civilian casualties. Shehu also highlighted that in 2022, there were at least 639 explosions with 223 civilian casualties across the same three states.

In light of these concerning statistics, the DSS emphasized the importance of citizens avoiding crowded or suspicious areas. Peter Afunanya, the Director of PR & Strategic Communications at the DSS National Headquarters, conveyed this message while extending well-wishes to Muslim faithful for Ramadan and Christians for the Lent period. Afunanya urged individuals to promptly report any unusual activities or movements to security agencies for swift action.
