Nigerian Traders in Ghana Send SOS to Abuja Over Repeated Closure of Their Businesses

Nigerian merchants in Ghana are in anguish and are calling on the federal government to take necessary effective actions immediately as Ghanaian authorities have initiated another lockdown of Nigerian owned businesses.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Traders, Dr. Ken Ukaoha, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, condemning the discrimination and ill treatment of Nigerian traders in Ghana.

He explained that this display shows Ghana’s resolution to undermine trade and economic integration stipulated by the ECOWAS, urging the Nigerian government to act with urgency.

Recalling hundreds of shops belonging to Nigerians have previously been shut down and unopened since September 2019, he said,

“The notice placed above the padlocks on each of the locked shops informs owners to come to their Ministry of Trade and Industry with evidence of payment of one million dollars.”

“It is indeed a complete dent on the face of ECOWAS and a bold question, perhaps asking the Nigerian Government ‘What would you do?’ or ‘Do your worst!’.
