Montana has become the first US state to ban TikTok, with the law taking effect next year.
This ban is significant as it could serve as a test for a national ban of the Chinese-owned app, which lawmakers in Washington are calling for due to security concerns.
The law states that TikTok cannot operate within Montana’s jurisdiction, and it is a violation for users to access or download the app, with each violation punishable by a $10,000 fine per day.
