Former Ogun Speaker, Others Arraigned Over Alleged N2.5b Fraud

A former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, and two other principal career officers of the assembly, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, have been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta. The charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allege misappropriation of public funds totaling N2.5 billion during Oluomo’s tenure as speaker in 2022.

The legal proceedings stem from accusations of financial fraud, with Oluomo and the officers facing charges related to their official conduct and financial management. Oluomo’s impeachment in 2022 by 18 out of 26 house members over allegations of highhandedness, gross misconduct, and poor leadership style had triggered legal challenges, including his approach to the state high court to contest the removal.

During the court session on Monday, it was noted that the counsel representing the anti-graft agency could not attend. As a result, the case was adjourned to February 29 and March 1, providing time for all parties to be adequately represented in the legal proceedings. The charges and legal actions underscore the commitment to addressing alleged financial misconduct and ensuring accountability in public office.
