A Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, on Monday, ordered the remand of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arraignment for alleged abuse of office.
The remand order was issued by Justice Rahman Oshodi after Emefiele and his co-defendant, Herry Omoile, pleaded not guilty to a 26-count charge. The charges, brought against them by the EFCC, revolve around abuse of office.
Emefiele will remain in custody until Thursday, when the judge is scheduled to rule on his bail application. On the other hand, Omoile was remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services.
Prior to the court’s decision, Emefiele’s lawyer, Abdulakeem Ladi-Lawal, had urged the court to grant his client bail on self-recognition or on the most liberal terms possible.
