Maritime Security Experts Advocate for the Establishment of Nigerian Coast Guard Corps

In response to the persistent cases of crude oil theft in Nigeria’s coastal areas, maritime security experts are advocating for the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard Corps (NCGC) to effectively address this menace. The proponents of the NCGC argue that such a dedicated corps would bring specialized maritime expertise to the security landscape, focusing specifically on maritime security, law enforcement at sea, and the protection of coastal and territorial waters.

Mohammed Adara, a security expert and former administrative officer at the Rivers Command of the Nigerian Merchant Navy, highlighted the need for a targeted response to maritime threats, such as piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling, which require specialized capabilities. The NCGC, if established, would play a vital role in developing specific strategies to address these threats more effectively than agencies with broader mandates.

Adara emphasized that the NCGC would ensure the protection of critical coastal assets, including offshore oil and gas installations, ports, and shipping lanes. Additionally, the corps would be instrumental in conducting search and rescue operations at sea, responding to emergencies, and ensuring the safety of maritime activities, requiring specific training and capabilities.

Adara also pointed out the potential involvement of the NCGC in the prevention of environmental crimes, international collaboration, community engagement, and resource optimization. He highlighted the positive impact the establishment of the NCGC could have on Nigeria, fostering a secure maritime environment that encourages international trade and shipping. This, in turn, could attract more vessels to Nigerian ports, boosting trade, customs revenue, and related services.

Security expert Idaminabo Abel further emphasized that a coast guard would collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, leveraging their understanding of and proximity to coastal communities for effective maritime security. The proposed NCGC is seen as a solution to the recurrent challenges posed by crude oil theft in Nigeria’s coastal regions.
