A gas explosion in Nairobi, Kenya, occurred at an industrial building during the refilling of gas cylinders, resulting in a significant fire that engulfed the facility. The incident took place just before midnight in the Embakasi neighborhood. The explosion caused extensive damage to the building, which housed a company involved in the gas refilling operation.

The fire then spread to a nearby textile and garment warehouse, causing damage to vehicles and impacting both commercial and residential properties in the vicinity.

The Kenya Red Cross played a crucial role in responding to the emergency, successfully evacuating 271 individuals to various health facilities in Nairobi. However, the incident resulted in tragic consequences, with three reported fatalities. Initially, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed two deaths and 222 injuries, but the Kenya Red Cross later updated the death toll to three.

The fire was eventually extinguished, but authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. The scene of the incident witnessed chaotic and distressing moments, with Nairobi residents capturing videos on their phones that depicted the severity of the situation.

The footage revealed concerned voices and screams as the fire and smoke engulfed the industrial area, causing widespread damage and leaving the community in shock. The commander in charge of police in Embakasi, Wesley Kimeto, expressed concern that the death toll might rise further, emphasizing the gravity of the tragic event.
