ECOWAS Members Meet As Troubled States Test Unity

During an extraordinary session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the issue of President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone elections in Senegal was addressed. This decision came just a week after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger declared their exit from the organization.

Omar Alieu Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, described this period as “the most challenging time” and referred to the crisis in Senegal as a “disturbing development.” He emphasized the importance of unity within the bloc while addressing the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Abuja, Nigeria.

Although Senegal’s foreign and defense ministers were in attendance, representatives from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Guinea—countries suspended from ECOWAS due to coups—were notably absent.

Following private discussions among ministers, ECOWAS is expected to issue a closing statement on the matter.
