Senate Summons FCT Minister, Police Commissioner Over Kidnapping Cases

The Senate has called for the appearance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, in response to the rising cases of kidnapping in Abuja.

Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP, Delta North) sponsored the motion following the kidnap and tragic death of his Senior Legislative Aide (SLA), Barrister Chris Agidy, in Galadimawa last year.

The Senate adopted several resolutions, including urging the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to increase security patrols and surveillance nationwide to combat kidnapping.

Additionally, the Senate called for the installation of CCTV cameras along Abuja highways and the establishment of a dedicated three-digit emergency number for swift response to security incidents.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was also tasked with ensuring the functionality of dedicated emergency numbers for Police, Ambulance, and Fire Service.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced that the FCT Minister and Police Commissioner would meet with the Senate in a closed-door session on a date to be determined.

This meeting aims to discuss the strategies being implemented to curb the rising cases of kidnappings, not only in Abuja but across Nigeria.

The tragic incident involving the kidnapping of Barrister Chris Agidy and 19 others in Galadimawa last November underscores the urgency of addressing these security challenges.
