While Boko Haram Fly in Jets, Nigerian Troops Kill Themselves

The average Nigerian Soldier stationed in North East has experienced or witnessed his fair share of violence and deaths which lead to a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event.

Just imagine that a notorious criminal is being treated like a king. Is it not evil under the sun, when beggars ride on horses, and kings work on foot?

While the federal government was flying Boko Haram terrorists who surrendered to troops in military aircraft, a soldier in Maiduguri killed four of his colleagues and killed himself, sparking renewed fears about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) amongst troops fighting insurgents in Nigeria.

How the Nigerian government could think of rehabilitating, educating, de-radicalizing and reintegrating Boko Haram members into the society they voluntarily victimized calls for concerns. Meanwhile, the troops fighting the terrorists in the North East are neglected with PTSD and are killing each other.

Spokesman of the Nigeria Army, Sagir Musa revealed that:

A corporal of the Nigerian Army serving at Theatre

Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Army Super Camp 15, Malam Fatori, went berserkin early hours of February 26, 2020, and opened fire, killing four of his colleagues before shooting himself. Two of his colleagues were also injured during the incident and are currently in stable condition in our hospital in Maiduguri.”

The average Nigerian Soldier stationed in North East has experienced or witnessed his fair share of violence and deaths which lead to a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event.

These men are forced to drag the bodies of their colleagues in the face of active attacks from the terrorists and are left without mental care. This is not a one-off occurrence, it happens every day.

Now tell me, who would not go berserk?

How are the Nigerian Troops Treated?

We did not understand how bad the viral videos of soldiers crying out for lack of guns and trucks in the war front and the embarrassing one of troops pushing an armoured personnel carrier on foot was until 2014 when 500 soldiers fled, I mean ran away to Cameroon in the middle of an active battle with terrorists.

In October 2019, another set, a major and 21 soldiers fled from the scene of a Boko Haram attack after feeling overpowered, who wouldn’t?

As if it is not bad enough, post-traumatic stress disorder, which is a common disaster for military personnel across the world, is taken for granted with frequent denials and absolute silence from the military thereby worsening the crisis.

In November 2017, a soldier opened fire on a captain killed him then committed suicide.

In June 2018, an army captain on active deployment in the BokoHaram war committed suicide as he underwent a psychiatric evaluation in Borno state.

In September 2018, Adegor Okpako, a staff sergeant attached to 192 Battalion in Gwoza, killed another sergeant, injured four others and killed himself.

In the same month, Markus Yusuf, a soldier killed his colleague injured another before fatally ripping apart his mouth with a rifle.

How have these signs been ignored?

What Boko Haram is ‘Enjoying’?

After the federal government initiated the operation safe corridor to grant amnesty to Boko Haram members, the national assembly is considering a motion to establish an agency to educate, De-radicalize, rehabilitate and reintegrate the insurgents into society.

Is it true that the Nigerian army recruited repentant insurgents into the troops?

While saner climes convicts’ terrorists, In Nigeria, an army general Abdulmalik Biu dinct mince words when he said an ex Boko Haram member stands a chance to be the president of this country.

Who is Deceiving Who? Killers said it, You believed It.

We are expected to believe that the surrendered terrorists according to a statement by the Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu said…

“During preliminary interrogation, the surrendered terrorists regretted their involvement in the dastardly acts of killing and abduction of innocent people as well as attacks on security agencies.

“They equally disclosed that their leadership has been in disarray for the past four months since the renewed offensive actions by the troops against their enclaves leading to high casualties on their foot soldiers amidst serious dislocation of their command structures.

“They further disclosed that many of their erstwhile colleagues are wandering in the forest and willing to give up their unholy adventure but are afraid of being killed by the security agencies. They, therefore, call on them to take the bold decision and surrender to any Nigerian Army unit closest to them as the safety of their lives is guaranteed”, the statement read in part.
