About 30 people feared dead, following the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Chad.
According to AFP, the Defence Minister, Mahamat Abali Salah said that the mine collapsed on Tuesday morning at Kouri Bougoudi, a location known for illegal mining, near the Libyan border.
Salah said that the number of casualties has not been ascertained since there are many people that engaged in the mining activities. However, an army official who witnessed the incident confirmed that about 30 persons died in the collapse.
The Chadian government has authorised mining companies to exploit the deposits but rights groups accuse authorities of using Arab fighters to orchestrate a takeover of the area.
