ILO Highlights Role of Artificial Intelligence in Occupational Evaluation

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has highlighted the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in evaluating job occupations, citing its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and speed compared to human assessments. In a recent report titled “A Technological Construction of Society,” the ILO compared evaluations of occupations conducted by GPT-4, a type of AI, with those of human respondents in the United Kingdom.

The study revealed a high correlation between the results generated by both approaches, indicating AI’s potential for occupational research. However, the report cautioned that AI models may overestimate the prestige of occupations linked to the digital economy and underestimate the value of certain stigmatized professions. Moreover, the study highlighted AI’s limitations in understanding the hierarchies of prestige as perceived by demographic minorities.

Despite these challenges, experts in Nigeria, including Tolu Adedayo from the Chartered Institute of Bankers and Haruna Abdullahi from the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service, emphasized the importance of embracing AI in the Nigerian workforce to enhance productivity, reshape the workplace, and create new job opportunities, fostering economic growth and competitiveness in the global market.
