NLC Protests Labour Party’s Planned Convention

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a picket at the national secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja on Wednesday, demanding the postponement of the party’s convention.

At present, the police are present at the property gates, working to maintain peace.

The NLC is also urging for the immediate resignation or removal of Julius Abure as the LP’s national chairperson.

Outside the secretariat’s premises, NLC members held placards with various messages while singing solidarity songs playing from a stationary van.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the NLC instructed its members across states to picket all LP secretariats nationwide due to Abure’s “financial recklessness and disregard for NLC leadership.”

The NLC has accused Abure multiple times of attempting to unilaterally hold a national convention against the party’s constitution.

In recent developments, there has been a back-and-forth between the NLC and LP.

The NLC passed a vote of no confidence in Abure and demanded his resignation as the LP chairman.

The NLC also alleges that Abure is managing the LP’s affairs as a sole administrator.
