UCH Staff Protest Against Power Outage, Call for Help

Expressing their dissatisfaction, employees at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, highlighted their inability to effectively carry out their duties in the absence of adequate lighting.

This concern was voiced during a meeting organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which acts as the umbrella body for all unions within the hospital.

Gathered on the hospital premises, the assembly brought together members from various unions, including the Non-academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), and Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals Research Institutions and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAN).

Speaking to the press after the meeting, JAC Chairman, Comrade Oludayo Olabampe, emphasized that the electricity supply to UCH had been disconnected by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to an outstanding debt of N495 million since Tuesday, the 19th of March, 2024.

He appealed to the Federal Government, Governor Seyi Makinde, and other relevant stakeholders to intervene and assist the hospital in restoring the power supply, as the current situation hampers the staff’s ability to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Comrade Olabampe stated, “We have informed our members about the measures being taken to address their welfare amidst the power outage experienced since last Tuesday. The complete lack of electricity has created significant challenges for our staff in performing their duties efficiently. This situation is unacceptable, and we urge prompt action to resolve it. The situation at UCH reflects broader implications for all Nigerians.”
