Anambra Govt to Enroll Students in Health Insurance Scheme

The Anambra State Government is taking measures to enroll students from the state into the Social Health Insurance Scheme to improve healthcare services for higher institution students.

Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, the Managing Director of Anambra State Health Insurance Authority (ASHIA), made this announcement during a visit to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Awka.

Dr. Onyemaechi emphasized that this action aligns with the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme Law 2016, which adheres to the new National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, mandating health insurance for all residents.

ASHIA, in partnership with a healthcare agency, is proposing a premium of N4,000 per student per academic session for university students’ insurance.

This initiative aims to provide students with healthcare access beyond the university campus, ensuring coverage during breaks in accredited hospitals nationwide using their identity cards.

The primary goal is to ensure students receive quality healthcare, promoting their well-being both on and off campus.

Onyemaechi reiterated ASHIA’s dedication to delivering quality healthcare services to students throughout their university education.

Acknowledging the initiative, Prof. Kate Omenugha, the Vice Chancellor of COOU, praised the potential positive impact of the health insurance scheme on students.

She expressed the universities’ readiness to complete the necessary paperwork for the program’s implementation before the next academic session, anticipating a reduction in the financial burden of healthcare access for students.
