The former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), has resigned from the state cabinet for the second time. Adangor tendered his resignation to the Secretary of the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, in a letter dated April 24, 2024, rejecting his deployment to the Ministry of Special Duties by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He accused the governor of interfering with his duties as the Attorney General, alleging that Fubara had directed him not to defend or oppose suits filed against the Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by individuals sponsored by the state government.
The resignation letter, titled ‘Cabinet Reshufflement: Notice of Rejection of Deployment and Resignation from the Rivers State Executive Council’, stated that Adangor was no longer willing to serve in the administration of Governor Fubara. He claimed that the governor had interfered with his duties as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, directing him not to defend or oppose suits filed against the Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by persons admittedly hired and sponsored by the Government of Rivers State.
The resignation of Adangor, a loyalist of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, follows his redeployment from the Ministry of Justice to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor’s Office) in a cabinet reshufflement approved by Governor Fubara. The reshufflement also affected.
Adangor and Kamalu are among the core loyalists of Wike who had resigned their offices last December but were later restored to their positions following a peace agreement reached in Abuja.
The resignation of Adangor is the latest development in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where the governor and his predecessor, Wike, have been engaged in a power tussle. The situation has escalated in recent weeks, with both sides accusing each other of interfering in the affairs of the state government.
