Nigeria Too Complex For Central Policing – Ex-Defence Minister

Former Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau, has emphasized that Nigeria’s intricate nature makes it challenging to ensure security through the police alone. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Community Protection Guard, a community-based security outfit established by the Zamfara State Government, Gusau advocated for a reevaluation of the nation’s security strategy.

Gusau highlighted Nigeria’s vast and diverse terrain, coupled with an estimated population of 223.8 million, making it difficult for a single police force to effectively patrol and control the entire nation. He urged strategic considerations for creating appropriate support structures and emphasized that security is a collective responsibility.

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Chief Olabode George expressed concern over the recent surge in kidnappings in Nigeria, stating that the country is on the verge of collapse. He called for the provision of sophisticated weapons for the South-West local security outfit, Amotekun, and advocated for the establishment of state and community policing to address the prevailing security challenges. George emphasized the need to revisit the issue of constitutional reform to address obstacles hindering the country’s growth.
