SSANU, NASU Declare 7-Day Warning Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have jointly announced a seven-day warning strike on Monday. The reason behind this decision is the demand for the Federal Government to release four months of unpaid salaries owed to their members following the 2022 nationwide strike.

This move comes after the joint action committee of both unions reached a resolution during a meeting in Akure, Ondo State capital, held on Thursday and Friday. The National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, signed the communique detailing these decisions, which was shared with the media on Monday.

In response to the government’s failure to fulfill promises made to workers, SSANU and NASU initiated a nationwide industrial action in 2022, two months after ASUU began their strike. Despite following due process before embarking on the four-month strike, the government under President Muhammadu Buhari withheld salaries of the workers.

While President Bola Tinubu’s administration announced payment for ASUU members last October, concerns arose regarding the non-teaching staff’s outstanding salaries. SSANU and NASU expressed discontent over being excluded from this payment and warned of potential disruptions to university operations if their demands are not met.

The unions criticized the government’s decision to exclude them from salary payments related to the previous strike, citing it as a violation of agreements made post-strike regarding non-victimization of participating members.
