According to police reports, South African footballer Luke Fleurs was tragically killed in a car hijacking incident on Wednesday night at a petrol station in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida.
The 24-year-old Kaizer Chiefs player was waiting to be served when he was approached by unidentified armed men who instructed him to exit his vehicle.
After Fleurs was removed from his car, one of the assailants shot him once in the upper body, according to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Following the shooting, one of the suspects reportedly fled the scene in Fleurs’ vehicle.
Kaizer Chiefs, one of the most popular clubs in the country and 12-time league champions, released a statement expressing their condolences and describing Fleurs’ death as a tragic loss.
The club has left the investigation to the police and has promised to provide further details as they become available.
