Singapore Rules Out 2026 Commonwealth Games Hosting

Singapore’s decision on Wednesday to opt out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Malaysia’s lead, has cast uncertainty on the future of this multi-sport event.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been actively seeking a new host after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs last year.

Malaysia was initially considered a potential replacement but declined the opportunity last month, citing financial constraints, despite the CGF’s offer of a £100 million ($126 million) incentive.

This financial support remains open to any interested host.

In a joint statement, “Commonwealth Games Singapore and Sport Singapore have studied the feasibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and have decided not to make any bid to host the Games,” the two sports bodies said in a joint statement, giving no more detail.”
