Nigeria Finishes Second in Medal Tally at 2023 African Games

Team Nigeria finished second in the medal tally at the 2023 African Games in Ghana, winning 121 medals in 25 sports, including 47 gold, 34 silver, and 40 bronze. Egypt took the overall lead with 191 medals, including 102 gold, 47 silver, and 42 bronze.

Weightlifting was Nigeria’s most successful sport, with 32 medals, but athletics, wrestling, boxing, and arm wrestling also contributed significantly to the medal total. Meanwhile, four Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) athletes returned home to a hero’s welcome on Sunday after competing in the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The NMMAF Board, in a statement issued over the weekend, expressed its delight in congratulating Team Nigeria on their exceptional performance in the Games, where MMA was featured as a showcase sport.Team Nigeria’s MMA fighters won four medals: one gold, one silver, and two bronze.

South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, and host Ghana rounded up the top six medalists. The next African Games will take place in Cairo, Egypt, in 2027.
