African Games 2023: Brume Retains Gold in Women’s Long Jump

Nigeria’s Ese Brume soared to victory in the women’s long jump event at the African Games, setting a new record of 6.92 meters to defend her title in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Thursday night.

She had previously claimed the title in 2019 in Rabat, Morocco, and continued her impressive performance five years later in Ghana.

Brume secured the gold with her first attempt, while her compatriot Prestina Ochonogor also impressed with a bronze medal win, achieving a jump of 6.67 meters.

Burkina Faso’s Koala Marthe took home the bronze medal. However, it was a slightly disappointing outcome for Nigeria’s Ruth Usoro, who finished fourth with a jump of 6.62 meters.

In addition to the success in the long jump, Nigeria excelled in other events on Thursday. Obiageri Amachi clinched gold in the discus throw, achieving a personal best of 58.93 meters on her final throw. Her teammate Chioma Onyekwere secured the silver medal.

Meanwhile, in the women’s heptathlon event, Kemi Francis-Petersen claimed the silver medal with a total of 5268 points, coming second to Ahouanwanou Odile of Benin Republic.
