Senate Proposes Five-Year Jail Term for Sexual Offenders in University

The Senate revisited the sexual harassment bill passed by the 8th senate on Wednesday and proposed a five-year imprisonment and N5m fine for lecturers convicted for such offence.

Previously, the bill process did not receive presidential assent after the passage by the 8th senate. However, the bill has been re-introduced and sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.

Omo-Agege has urged concerned parents and youth to support the proposed bill towards enacting an effective law against sexual harassment in workplaces and educational institutions.

According to the bill, an educator will be “guilty of committing an offence of sexual harassment against a student if he/she has sexual intercourse with a student who is less than 18years of age; has sexual intercourse with a student or demands sex from a student or a prospective student as a condition to study in an institution, or as a condition to the giving of a passing grade or the granting of honour and scholarships.”
