N400M Was for ‘Special National Assignment’ – Olisa Metuh

The former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, trial has started on Friday, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

During the cross-examination, Metuh began with his narration of how the sum of N400Million given to him from the office of the former National Security Adviser (NSA) was disbursed on what he called ’special national assignment’.

He said that the former president Goodluck Jonathan gave him a special assignment for the 2015 presidential election. He also averred that the funds did not come directly from former President that he only authorized the release. But, he did not explain what the critical national assignment meant neither where it was carried out.

On the contrary, the prosecution counsel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting him and his company, Destra Investment Limited, for alleged money laundering and diversion of the fund, claimed that Metuh knew that the funds he got from the detained Dasuki were for the acquisition of vital equipment to combat insurgency in the North-East of Nigeria and expected to account for the funds.

However, Justice Abang as the presiding Judge has adjourned the matter to September 30, 2019, for the continuation of trial.
