Nigeria has experienced 227 total and partial national grid collapses from 2010 to April 2024.
General Manager of Public Affairs at Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN, Ndidi Mbah, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday. She revealed a 76.47% decline in grid collapses over the last five years. with 20 grid disturbances compared to 85 in the previous five years. Mbah noted that the reduction in grid disturbances is contrary to popular opinion, indicating some improvement in the power sector’s stability.
This announcement coincides with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s recent 240% electricity tariff hike, sparking backlash from Nigerians, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, manufacturers, and other organizations. Despite criticisms, The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has warned that there will be a total blackout in the country in the next three months if the proposed electricity tariff hike is not implemented.
The minister stated this Monday in Abuja when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Power at an investigative hearing over the recent electricity tariff hike by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC). Adelabu said “The entire sector will be grounded if we don’t increase the tariff.
