Community in Enugu Protests Alleged Police Brutality, Unlawful Arrests

The people of Obeagu in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State protested on Monday against what they termed persistent harassment, persecution, and unlawful arrest of their indigenes by policemen from the Awgu Divisional Command.

Carrying placards with messages such as “Stop the Police Brutality” and “CP/IGP Call Awgu DPO to Order,” the villagers called on Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and the Inspector General of Police to intervene.

The President General of the community, Ogbuefi Callistus Ojogbu, accused the police of taking sides in a land dispute and unleashing terror on law-abiding citizens.

He called for a thorough investigation into the actions of the police officers involved and urged the government to ensure justice was served.

The community also demanded the immediate release of three persons held at the Awgu Police Division. Efforts to obtain reactions from the police were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
