Christian Elders Disagree Over New Constitution Modalities

Members of the National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) are at odds over the approach to be taken in formulating a new Constitution ahead of the National Assembly’s constitutional review.

During a virtual meeting convened by NCEF, the elders failed to reach a consensus on the modalities for the exercise.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS), Tony Nnadi, argued that amending the Constitution without suspending certain provisions from military regimes would not achieve equity and stability.

Nnadi advocated for a completely new Constitution created by indigenous nationalities to address Nigeria’s challenges.

In contrast, the traditional ruler of Daffo in Plateau State, Jonathan Akuns, proposed amending the 1963 Republican Constitution, which he claimed was never abrogated but merely suspended.

Akuns suggested that revisiting the 1963 Constitution would preserve Nigeria’s democratic and structural foundation, highlighting the importance of democratic continuity and referencing India as a model of republicanism.
