Army Withdraws Troops from Okuama Community

The Nigerian Army has withdrawn its troops from the troubled Okuama community in Ughelli south local government area of Delta State.

Confirming the development at a media briefing, Governor Oborevwori said the Army has agreed to withdraw its officers and men from Okuama. According to him, matters of security were better handled with tact, wisdom, and patience.

The Governor also commended members of the National Assembly, other distinguished Nigerians, traditional rulers, and other leaders of thought who stood with the state throughout the Okuama saga.

“As the residents of Okuama begin the process of returning to their homes, I vow the Delta State Government’s commitment to ensuring that the process is smooth and seamless.
“After conducting a personal assessment of the community on April 20th, 2024,” we have since begun establishing an Internally Displaced Persons camp at Ewu to serve as a transition to facilitate their recovery. We will provide all required assistance to help them settle swiftly and happily in Okuama.

He added that with the Army’s withdrawal, the people of Okuama can now begin the process of reintegration and rebuilding their community. The Okuama community, which had been enjoying peace, was plunged into chaos on March 14 when four Army officers and 13 soldiers were brutally murdered and mutilated.
