The University of Benin UNIBEN has suspended its students’ union government SUG indefinitely following a violent attack on Barrister Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party candidate for the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.
The University’s Registrar, A.A. Bobola, announced the indefinite suspension of the students’ union in a statement on Monday, April 29, 2024. DAILY POST reports that Akpata was attacked by suspected political thugs at the university’s senior staff club on April 12, 2024.
The incident occurred when the SUG president led some students to invade the venue of an interactive session, demanding a halt to the event.
The statement disclosed that the university management set up a panel to investigate the incident, which led to the suspension of the students’ union and the formation of a caretaker committee to coordinate students’ activities during the period of suspension.
