Over 50M People in West Africa, Sahel Region Face Food Crisis

Weather experts have warned that more than 50 million people in West Africa and the Sahel region may experience a food crisis between June and October.

A representative of the Agriculture, Hydrology and Meteorology Research Centre, Abdou Ali, stated this during the seasonal forecasting workshop for the Agro-hydro-climatic characteristics of the rainy season for the Sahelian and Sudanian zones of West Africa, in Abuja.

He stated that factors such as insecurity, inadequate food production, and a delayed start to the rainy season contribute to the anticipated crisis.

To address this, Ali urged countries in the region to reform their food production systems, mobilize funds, activate contingency plans, and seek assistance from partners.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has begun distributing seasonal rainfall predictions to stakeholders to mitigate the impact of flooding and other disasters.
