Meta announced Thursday that it was developing new tools to safeguard teenage users from “sextortion” schemes on its Instagram platform, which US politicians have accused of harming young people’s mental health.
The corporation is testing an AI-powered “nudity protection” application that will obscure photographs of nudity transmitted to children. The US corporation stated that it would also provide advice and safety suggestions to individuals participating in such conversations.
According to US authorities, over 3,000 young people were victims of exploitation schemes in the United States in 2022.
In October, more than 40 US states sued Meta, accusing the corporation of profiting off children’s agony. Meta declared in January that it will implement measures to protect under-18s, including increasing content limits.
