FCCPC Seals Chinese Supermarket in Abuja

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has closed an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket, located within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, due to allegations of discriminatory practices against Nigerians. FCCPC officials inspected the premises on Monday, sealing the supermarket after interrogating Nigerian workers and discovering that the owner had fled.

The supermarket’s owner, Cindy Liu Bei, a Chinese national, had reportedly implemented a controversial policy restricting entry to Chinese nationals only, excluding Nigerians. This policy led to widespread criticism on social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing concerns over the discriminatory treatment.

FCCPC officials, led by the Director for Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, visited the supermarket in response to the viral video alleging discrimination against Nigerians. Adeyinka confirmed that the owner had fled with her family, as shown on the CCTV footage.

The FCCPC has directed the owner to appear before the commission tribunal by Wednesday, warning that failure to comply would result in further regulatory actions, including sealing the premises until she appears before the commission. The supermarket remains closed until the owner complies with the summons.
