Russian and Nigerian foreign ministers hold talks in Moscow

The foreign ministers of Russia and Nigeria engaged in discussions in Moscow on Wednesday regarding the future relations between their respective countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized to his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, that Moscow views Nigeria as a key partner on the African continent.

Tuggar echoed these sentiments, stating, “The relationship will continue to grow. We feel that we are in a right position to have a very strong strategic relationship with Russia,”

Lavrov also affirmed that Moscow will continue its support for countries in the Sahara-Sahel region to enhance their military capabilities.

This region, encompassing Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, and Guinea, has long been afflicted by political instability.

Over the past decade, jihadist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have gained strength and influence in the area.

Amidst criticism directed at Russia due to its conflict in Ukraine, the country is seeking to expand its influence in the global south. An upcoming meeting with African foreign ministers is scheduled to be held in Sochi later this year.
