Irish Prime Minister Announces Resignation

Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has announced his resignation as the leader of the governing Fine Gael party. In a surprise announcement on Wednesday, Varadkar stated that he would also step down as prime minister once a successor is chosen.

Varadkar, 45, expressed his intention to relinquish the presidency and leadership of Fine Gael, with his resignation as taoiseach (prime minister) to follow suit. He informed reporters in Dublin that he had requested the selection of a new party leader by April 6, facilitating the election of a new prime minister after parliament’s Easter break.

Citing personal and political reasons, Varadkar emphasized that it was the appropriate moment for him to step aside. However, he did not provide further details on the political motivations behind his decision.

“I have nothing else lined up I have nothing in mind. I have no definite personal or political plans,” Varadkar added.
