The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly criticized the dismissal of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor from Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team. HURIWA views this move as a significant mistake, especially considering the successful defense provided by these lawyers for Kanu.
In a press statement, HURIWA pointed out the recent setback in Kanu’s case, where his new legal team failed to secure bail based on health grounds. This setback, according to HURIWA, underscores the importance of Ozekhome and Ejiofor’s contributions. The civil rights advocacy group commended their legal expertise and unwavering commitment to justice, noting their accomplishments in Kanu’s defense despite facing personal risks, including alleged assassination attempts.
HURIWA stressed the need to acknowledge the vital roles played by Ozekhome and Ejiofor, urging Kanu’s new legal team to prioritize his release without disparaging the efforts of the former lawyers. The group called for a reevaluation of Kanu’s legal strategy and emphasized the importance of unity among all stakeholders involved.
